Rahis Bharti, the artistic director of the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan, is a Jaipur-native musician and a descendant of courtier musicians from the times of maharajas. Dhoad Gypsies have performed in over a thousand concerts in one hundred countries throughout the world within the last 22 years.
Thus, the group is known today as “the Cultural Ambassador of Rajasthan.” Some of Dhoad’s most prestigious performances include playing at Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in London; before Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and former President François Hollande of France; and at a birthday party for the lead vocalist and cofounder of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger.
Dhoad Gypsies are a collective of consummate, wise, and spirited musicians, vocalists, and dancers from various generations. With six musicians, one dancer, and one fire-eating fakir, the Dhoad Gypsies are dedicated to representing the major elements of the Rajasthan musician castes.
Authentic without any of the heavy lifting, their catchy melodies and intense grooves—a heady blend of Hindustani classical and Sufi devotional music—are hypnotic, joyous, and instantly likeable.
